Alarming footage of a reckless biker riding full-throttle on one wheel on Sheikh Zayed Road proves dangerous drivers remain undeterred on Dubai’s highways, campaigners warn.
Just three weeks after two Emirati 4x4 drivers escaped with a dhs1,000 fine for a two-wheeled stunt on the same highway, footage of a thrill-seeking motorcyclist following suit has emerged.
The two-minute video, which has the Mission Impossible theme tune as its soundtrack, was uploaded on YouTube on Saturday and shows a trio of bikers speeding along the Al Barsha stretch of road before one pulls an almost vertical wheelie and careers down the middle lane for several kilometres.
General manager of Emirates Driving Institute, Peter Richardson, slammed the antics and said a tougher message must be sent out by the authorities. “They think they are above the law,” he said. “The punishment given to those 4x4 drivers unquestionably reinforces that infallibility. An example should have been made of those drivers. These road users are impervious to warnings.”
Richardson, a retired police officer from the UK, has witnessed the devastating consequences of reckless driving first hand.
“I’ve picked bits of the bodies of these young men off the roads. I’ve knocked on their parents’ doors to tell them the news their child isn’t coming home. I’ve seen the drivers left with serious disfigurements for the rest of their lives. Dangerous driving puts everyone at risk.”
Nikki Morgan, whose teenage daughter Charlii died after being hit by a speeding driver in Mirdif last year, said: “Maybe if drivers were able to meet the families who have been left devastated by these sort of actions, they would learn. Until the law is properly enforced, why would these people stop? They know they can get away with it.”
Veteran biker Adel Abuaysha, from Dubai, said: “If someone were to suddenly swerve or brake in front of this rider, it would take him a good couple of seconds to bring the front wheel down and hit the brakes or avoid whatever it is that’s in front of him - it goes without saying that it’ll be too late by then.”
Dubai Traffic Police said such audacious stunts are isolated and its officers constantly monitor the internet for evidence. “They are reckless and wild and we will crack down on such bad driving,” a spokesman said.

Mr Wolverine extreme sports are extreme sports! going down a major highway on two wheels or on a bike doing a wheelie is NOT an extreme sport! as we are NOT the spectators we are the drivers all around this fool that could end up killing him or he killing us! Ref cameras they are all over Dubai now and are now on top of police cars as well! Fines are being dished out so why was this guy not stopped and detained.
Posted by: Dr Spock [01.Aug.10 1 : 25 PM]@ dxb_voice, based on your logic, a crime doesn't matter if it doesn't affect any of us or we didn't see it... I didn't see these motorbike idiots or the other "stunt" drivers on SZR but I am not pleased that they are allowed to share our roads. @Sidubai, ALL instances of irresponsible driving need to be properly punished, whether it is these twerps on their bikes, the other stunt drivers, tailgaters, people who cut across lanes, people who drive too fast, people who drive too slow, people whose windows are tinted at more then 30%, people who use the overtaking lane as a race track rather than just for legitimate overtaking (it's an overtaking lane, not a "fast" lane, everyone... Learn about it.) I could go on...
Posted by: Lady Oryx [27.Jul.10 11 : 07 AM]They have specially organised events for things like this - I have been to one myself in RAK. There are also numerous track days in places like the autodrome, where you are not in danger of killing innocent bystanders, and an ambulance is always on standby. Why do stunts like this on a public road? I don't blame the police, they can't be everywhere all the time, but the Public Prosecution should follow up properly on cases like these when they are referred by the police. People like this are utterly selfish, and even if they're teens, I'm sure mommy and daddy can afford to fund track days for them.
Posted by: PSpencer [26.Jul.10 9 : 28 AM]Guys seriously you are exagerating wayyyy too much....you call THIS rekless dangerous driving !!! a Wheeliee ??!! lokk at the traffic on the road...he is doing it in a "safe way"..lane empty and no cars beside...ok it's against the law, but you are exagerating in a way that tells me you are out of sensational stories this summer... How can you compare this to those stupid drivers that Blocked all SZR !! they didn't cross line or sent at 200Km/h between cars... When I see the comments I can notice a lot of ignorance regarding bikers...I'm not defending this kind of stunts on the high way, but it's far from being the most dangerous thing I've seen on the Dubai roads.. What you should write about is the problem with RTA that allows 18 year old kids after guetting a bike licence to get a 1000cc engine bike..which is basically a killing machine in the hand of newbies.. There is more kids dying from a lack of proper regulation that wheliees...so please guys stop making sensation where there is none..
Posted by: sidubai [26.Jul.10 9 : 08 AM]Isolated cases? It happens every weekend on Jumeirah Road - well, maybe not in the hottest summer weeks, but almost year round. Just go there Thursday or Friday night. The road is BUSY BUSY and in all that traffic you have stunt riding bikes, racing cars et all. And the police?? Are turning a blind eye, or maybe two...
Posted by: HummelHummel [26.Jul.10 7 : 57 PM]Umm.. Well Lady Oryx , i think Dubai is part of 'rest of the world' inhabited by normal human beings. People in Dubai cannot be genetically modified to alter the psychology and behavior from rest of the world. The fact is that none of the comment writers got affected by this motorcyclist. The story would make sense if complaint was lodged or story was reported by someone on the road when this guy was riding the bike. The point being that whatever laws exist in any country or whatever punishment given to teens doing stunts , it has not helped eradicate this problem. On second thoughts ... the title of news should not be "Idiot drivers ... the sequel" . It should be more like "Bored Reporter ... the sequel"
Posted by: dxb_voice [26.Jul.10 6 : 32 PM]@dxb_voice Er, because this is a Dubai-based newspaper so naturally it will run stories that are of a concern to local people here. It doesn't matter if it happens every day or once a year here, it is still unacceptable behaviour on the roads. The roads here are already too dangerous and too many people get killed or injured and this kind of stupidity doesn't help. Why on earth are people apologising for selfish cretins who think they are above the law?
Posted by: Lady Oryx [26.Jul.10 4 : 06 PM]dxb_voice, the issue isn't really about whether it happens elsewhere, the issue is that even if the police are aware of it they often do little about it. And in cases such as the one seen with the police sergeant, the courts do even less.
Posted by: Fat Bhoy Tim [26.Jul.10 3 : 57 PM]After living in UAE for last 14 years , I would agree that such incidents are isolated. Driving almost every day on Sheikh Zayed road for last 6 years , I have yet to come across a wheeling motorcyclist. However I do notice that activity is so down in Dubai that journalists have resorted to searching on youtube every now and then to find "news" stories. The video is already on Youtube ... whats the NEWS in that ??? Performing or enjoying these stunts are quite natural at particular stage of one's life. It's not a local phenomenon but teen psychology present around the globe ! . For an experiment , you can search for London / Munich / Bombay or any other large city followed by word stunt and you would get many 'news' in youtube search results. Why to restrict and criticize only after searching 'Dubai Stunt' ?
Posted by: dxb_voice [26.Jul.10 3 : 27 PM]Beside the danger for other. Did someone ever noticed his clothes? The risk of a non successful wheelie is very high, therefore I would say he put himself in the most danger. Btw, don't the police have live cameras on such busy roads?
Posted by: woigl [26.Jul.10 3 : 01 PM]After watching the video I dont know how you can say that the roads were deserted they were busy!!
Posted by: Stace [26.Jul.10 2 : 26 PM]Wolf-erine - Please re read my post I said ARE YOU ONE OF THESE IDIOTS WHO AGREES WITH THIS BEHAVIOUR? And im sorry but anyone who condones this needs to taught about safety, yes in every sport there are dangers but they are professionals and there are safety people in place incase of accidents. This was on a public road where anything could have happened no matter how deserted the road was!. Driving is the most dangerous day to day things most people do, too many under estimate the dangers of driving etc so to add to it by pulling these kind of stunts is unexceptable in my eyes and most people eyes!. A biker killed my friends Brother and sister in law doing this, he was doing a wheely on a deserted road and he smacked into car at high speed killing them instantly! You see my point now???
Posted by: Stace [26.Jul.10 2 : 08 PM]Wolf-erine, it doesn't matter whether the road was deserted or not. What does matter is that this sort of behaviour is dangerous and unacceptable. Yes, it happens in other countries but most other countries would punish this sort of stupidity properly and the UAE could learn from this. Until then, I refuse to believe the authorities are at all serious about road safety.
Posted by: Lady Oryx [26.Jul.10 1 : 43 PM]I'm sure if a terrible incident happened to one of the families of the stuntmen would they realize what torment and pain the family of such terrible incidents go through.
Posted by: saddened [26.Jul.10 1 : 21 PM]Dear Stace, I dont want to turn the discussion into a personal path but in a discussion Calling the other person "IDIOT" because you dont agree with him is very impolite, mannar-less and disrespectful. therefore, I will not come down to your level of and discuss anything with you anymore.(P.S. I am not an emirati) Remember, the human beings have different minds, interests and hobbies. It doesnt make their interests and hobbies wrong if we dont personally agree with them. Sky diving is an extreme sport stunt as well, why dont we ban it as one day a skydiver might falls on someones head and kill him? the same case with every extreme sport. Do you get my point?
Posted by: wolf-erine [26.Jul.10 1 : 17 PM]What exactly will change the situation then?
Posted by: ExpatEddie [26.Jul.10 12 : 17 PM]Wolf-erine - I said this happens all over the world im not moaning about it just happening here. I'm guessing you're one of the idiots who agree with this and yes one day we will all leave your country and go elsewhere!! I just hope its not your family that is killed otherwise, you are going to feel bad for condoning their actions!
Posted by: Stace [26.Jul.10 11 : 54 AM]Dear djenkins99, I understand your point and i respect it. but you can also see in the video that the road was almost empty with very few cars (dawn time).
Posted by: wolf-erine [26.Jul.10 11 : 22 AM]Dear Stace, Writing down to 7Days every day and nagging about how bad this country is and its laws, is not going to change the situation and you know it very well. I find it right sometimes what the Emiratis say "if living here makes your life extremely unhappy and miserable, then leave to where you think has good system"
Posted by: wolf-erine [26.Jul.10 11 : 09 AM]Wolf-erine, you are missing the point. A wheelie on private property away from the public is not a problem because, as you point out, they are only endangering themselves. However, this stunt was carried out on one of Dubai's busiest roads, hence the risk to the public is high.
Posted by: djenkins99 [25.Jul.10 10 : 57 AM]Wolf-erine - WHAT?? So we should all just sit back and relax whilst these idiots kill our families on the roads should we?? Because it wont be long before this happens and then what should we still relax and let this happen??. Yes it happens all over the world but at least if they are caught in other countries they are punished, nothing is done here about this! What is the positive side tho these idiots doing this im interested so please enlighten me!!
Posted by: Stace [25.Jul.10 10 : 41 AM]Dubai Traffic Police said such audacious stunts are isolated and its officers constantly monitor the internet for evidence. "They are reckless and wild and we will crack down on such bad driving" a spokesman said. Didn't they say this last time??? Absoloute jokes!
Posted by: Stace [25.Jul.10 9 : 57 AM]Stupid stunt? He sure is!
Posted by: Barbara Blacksheep [25.Jul.10 9 : 55 AM]I dont understand why everyone takes everything negatively. such stunts are being done all over the world. youtube "wheelies" and see by yourselves. if these guys are creating a risk, it is only on themselves. you all know writting down negative comments on every small thing in this city is not going to change anything at all! So, Just relax, take it easy and look at things possitively (like every normal should).
Posted by: wolf-erine [25.Jul.10 9 : 53 AM]Just shows that weak punishments do nothing to deter actions like this. I wouldn't care except that they put others in danger, not only themselves. Perhaps dangerous drivers could be forced to spend a week attending RTAs with the ambulance service, to see first hand the pain and damage caused by even a moment's stupidity on the roads.
Posted by: PSpencer [25.Jul.10 9 : 47 AM]Its ok, this time they must have been celebrating the UAE's non existence at the FIFA World Cup
