Saudi lagging behind

Businesswomen and female entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia face more barriers and challenges than in other countries in the Middle East, according to a new report.

The report from the Monitor Group includes the findings of a survey of over 250 Saudi businesswomen.

These results where then compared to previous similar surveys carried out among local female business populations in the UAE, Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain and Tunisia.

Among many other scenarios, 62 per cent of Saudi businesswomen feel joining formal business networks is more challenging as a woman, compared to 17 per cent in a previous UAE study.

Gaining access to capital was also ranked highly as a difficult prospect with 53 per cent seeing this as more challe-nging
due to gender.

The report makes a host of recommendations including the need for a Ministry for Women’s Affairs and a relaxing of the law against female drivers and the requirement for women to appoint a male manager in businesses that serve both sexes.
