A drug addict who was desperate for a fix slashed his wrists in police custody so he could go to a Dubai hospital to meet a dealer.
Dubai Police had arrested an Emirati man on drugs charges and taken him to Rashidiya police station when the incident happened on April 15.
Brigadier Abdul Jalil Mahdi, head of the Anti-Narcotic Department in Dubai Police, said: “He slashed his wrists using a sharp tool and the guards in the police station transferred him to the hospital by ambulance.” He continued: “We then received information from a source that a Pakistani man was to give drugs to an inmate who was going to slash his wrists in order to get out of the cell and meet up with him at the hospital. “This is a new way to try and smuggle drugs to inmates. The defendant risked his life for a small amount of drugs.”
Officers went to the hospital and arrested the Pakistani. “We found that he has 18.4g of heroin with him and he confessed that he was smuggling the drugs to the Emirati addict,” Brigadier Abdul Jalil said. “He told us that an Emirati man gave him the drugs. “He gave us the name and address of the supplier, who is well known to us because he has a criminal record for drugs, and we went to his home to arrest him.” He added: “He tried to escape and ran away from the house but our troops chased him. He resisted arrest but finally we controlled him.”
Police found 113.3g of heroin in his home.
The three men have all been referred to Dubai Public Prosecution, which will prepare the case for court.
