Labourers are rescued

Nineteen caravans were gutted and 190 labourers evacuated after a gas cylinder exploded.

The fire broke out at 10am yesterday at a camp on the road between Al Ain and Abu Dhabi.

Colonel Saeed Salim of Al-Ain Police said: “We fought against the blaze for two hours and finally managed to control it.

“Explosions continued to go off while we were fighting the fire,” he added. No one was hurt in the blaze.

Great that no one was hurt, but how stupid that these labourers do not even have decent accomodation for all of their backbreaking work in the heat! 190 divided by 19 caravans equals 10 labourers per caravan - not at all safe or healthy, let alone comfortable. Suitable housing should be built for these men before the highrises go up.
