Arrests for campaign leaflet drop

Afghan police arrested helicopter pilots and campaign staff for allegedly violating Kabul airspace by dropping flyers for the main opposition presidential candidate, the government said.

The choppers flew over a Kabul stadium where more than 10,000 supporters for former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah rallied on the last day of campaigning for Afghanistan’s presidential election on Thursday.

“This is an act contrary to flying regulations in Kabul air space and was conducted without agreement and co-operation with security forces,” the Afghan interior ministry said in a statement.

“Therefore, the pilots and people who were dropping the flyers were arrested by border police and the case is under investigation,” it said.

Afghan security forces, which are made up of the army, intelligence and police, sent a separate letter of complaint to Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission calling for an investigation, they said.
