Tests pull in crowd

Dozens of people turned out for free diabetes testing in Safa Park yesterday.

The Joslin Diabetes Centre held the event for people of all ages as part of World Diabetes Day. The Health Authority also offered apples, sugar-free pastries and other snacks to show that a quick bite does not have to be laden with diabetes-inducing sugar.

The Joslin Centre, an affiliate of the DHA, is hoping to reduce the UAE’s very high diabetes rate, according to medical director Hamed Farooqi.

Large groups of families lined up for testing and consultation yesterday.

Abdul Khan from Islamabad in Pakistan was there with his two children.

“My grandfather had diabetes that was not diagnosed until the end of his life, and two of my uncles had it, so I was nervous for my family.
I want to know my whole family is safe,” he said.

Sahir from India was there with his wife and five-year-old son. “I am told that I have mildly high cholesterol, but apart from that, things look good,” he said.
