1 Delicious On Diyafah
For some of the best Lebanese food in town, head to Al Mallah on Al Diyafah Street in Satwa where you’ll be served piles of piping hot manakish, faultless falafel, heavenly hummus, sumptuous mixed grills and an eclectic range of fresh juices and milkshakes. A veritable Dubai institution, it offers the perfect street dining experience, combining cheap and excellent eats, with entertainment in the form of pimped-out supercars cruising up and down the street beside you. 04 398 4723
2 Ravenous For Ravi’s
The legendary Ravi’s, on the south side of the Satwa roundabout, is a perennial favourite among tourists and expats alike, despite being one of the cheapest eateries in town. Opt for the air-conditioned comfort of Ravi’s Palace or casual street-side dining on plastic chairs at the original Ravi’s next door; whichever you chose, you’ll be served ample portions of delicious Pakistani favourites. Open almost 24 hours, it only closes between 3am and 5am for a bleachy scrub down! 04 331 5353
3 Thali On Satwa Road
Try a thali for a classic Indian street dining experience. You’ll be served a tray which holds four or five different curries in small pots, rice and roti or naan bread and can take your pick from a selection of pickles. You can fill your belly for as little as dhs10 but watch out as one of the curries is usually a dessert which invariably comes as a surprise to the tastebuds! Look out for thali restaurants along Satwa Road; a dependable spot is Vandana Vegetarian restaurant. 04 331 5346
4 Bhaji Bites
Spice up a visit to the creek by taking a detour into the Textile Souk, near the abra station in Bur Dubai. There are a few stalls where you can buy fresh coconut and juices, but head further into the souk and you find a small shop selling Indian treats. Pay as little as dhs5 and the vendor will choose from his vat of fried bhajis (peppers, bananas or onions) and throw them into a paper bag - great to snack on while you stroll around the souk.
5 Pars It On
Sit on traditional carpeted pedestals and feast on a range of hearty Iranian stews and kebabs, and classic Arabic favourites including hummus, moutabel and healthy tabbouleh. There’s no inside dining, so now is the perfect time to make a visit and the atmospheric shisha garden, strewn with shrubs and lit by fairy lights, is what makes this low-key restaurant a special street-dining destination. 04 398 4000
6 Fish and Chips
You may not find a ‘chippy’ on every street corner in Dubai, but if you’re really hankering for some good old fish and chips the Fish & Chips Room in Jumeirah Beach Residence offers the real thing (with fat chips and mushy peas). You can plop your elbows on the counter as they fry your meal, or sit outside and people watch. Enjoy a leisurely lunch or turn up post-partying to satisfy a craving as it stays open until the wee hours.
7 Automatic Selection
The Automatic chain has been serving up great quality Arabic food throughout the Middle East for over 25 years. The usual vast range of mezze is accompanied by mountainous plates of salad, with tasty main courses including grilled meat, fish and kebabs. With branches all over town, Automatic is one of the best places around for a late-night snack or filling and delicious home-delivery.
8 Wild About Peeta
This Emirati-owned fusion shawarma restaurant created a huge buzz on its opening in October. Fresh, healthy shawarmas, salads and juices to go, served by incredibly friendly staff, has made it popular in a short time. The Moroccan salad and Thai shawarma are both highly recommended. Find it at Dubai Healthcare City. 800 9453
9 French Fare
For streetside dining European style, head to the ‘French quarter’ of The Walk at Rimal court, JBR and pull up a chair at one of the pavement tables at Paul or Le Pan Quotidien. Go for a late weekend breakfast, order a coffee and croissant and put the world to rights as the boulevard slowly wakes up, or head there later in the evening for a tasty pit stop before a night out.
10 Mirdif Munchies
Just around the corner from the Al Jadeed Bakery (next to the mosque on 15 street), Jabal Mirdif Cafeteria is a favourite amongst the Mirdif massive. And you can certainly get massive thanks to its delicious crisp whole chickens (dhs15 with salad, bread and hummus), mouth-on-fire shawarmas, and range of burgers. Open late, its the perfect stop for a night-end feast and in the morning you can return for one of the mixed fruit juices (although if you want to keep it healthy be sure to ask for a little or no sugar).
