Support for guard

Well-wishers are rallying around to raise cash for a security man who lost his leg when he was hit by a car while on duty in Dubai.

Father-of-two Dhamar Raj was in a critical condition following the horrific accident in the Meadows 8 gated community on November 10.

Residents were left reeling after the accident at the gate house of the complex.

As Raj approached to flag down the Mercedes, the driver lost control and pinned the 36-year-old Nepalese guard against an air conditioning unit, eyewitnesses said.

They added that the driver did not appear to slow down as he approached the barrier and was later breathalysed by the police.

Springs resident Val Burrell is co-ordinating a campaign to raise cash for Raj, who will be unable to work for months.

She said: “We’ve had a great response from people and are sorting out how best to help him. We have had offers of donations and are planning to have a stall at a community event coming up in December to raise money as well.

“Everyone was really shocked by what happened.”

Raj was put into a medically induced coma immediately after the crash amid fears his body would not stand the trauma of the amputation and massive blood loss.

Last week, he emerged from sedation for several days but medics were forced to induce unconsciousness once again after his blood pressure rocketed on Sunday. He is expected to remain under sedation for another week.

Raj’s employer Emrill is planning fundraising of its own for the guard with a collection among staff.

It is also determined to push for full compensation from the driver of the car if the case goes to court.

Emrill said the driver is still being held in custody and will remain behind bars until Raj is well enough to give a statement to the police.
