‘I’m not a criminal'

He rented a car to get around Dubai - but now Roddy Bassett is one of the world’s most wanted men.

The UK-based holiday salesman is the latest Dubai expat to end up on the Interpol wanted list - for owing less than dhs5,000 on a rented Peugeot.

“It’s just so ridiculous. I’m not a criminal and there I am on the wanted list with terrorists and drug lords,” he told 7DAYS.

While most countries contact Interpol - an international network of police forces - to track down major criminals like serial killers and terrorists, the UAE hunts anyone who has left the Emirates owing money.

The zero tolerance policy has left more than 160 former UAE residents rubbing shoulders with Osama Bin Laden and some of the world’s biggest criminals on the Interpol wanted list.

Of these, 112 Dubai cases are for fraud - a crime that includes owing money on apartments, cars or credit cards.

Bassett, 39, was working for a Media City marketing company when he rented the Peugeot in 2005.

He said he paid every dirham due until the month he left Dubai but would have had extra charges for cancelling his rental contract. “I will be the first to admit it  - I didn’t handle it very well. I drove it from my place in Jumeirah to a friend’s and left it there,” he said.

Last week, he turned himself in to police  in Exeter, England, after his father informed him that Interpol was looking for him.

He said his elderly dad emailed him from Scotland with the news last week.

“He said: ‘You’re wanted by Interpol…would you like to elaborate?’ I was stunned,” Bassett said, adding he is broke but will “absolutely” repay the rental company.

A spokeswoman for Devon and Cornwall police confirmed that Bassett had been released after Interpol confirmed the case concerned a rental car bill.

Interpol told 7DAYS last night that it had discussed the case with Dubai police and that all charges against Bassett may be dropped if he paid a fine of approximately dhs 4,000 and paid off his car rental debts. However, he said there must be no other charges against Bassett if the plan is to work.

Interpol also said that Bassett could contact it directly if work out a solution.

Jammy, let me put it in this way. It seems that owing $4000 is serious crime that interpol has to be hooked on to it. But one can beat their maid blue and make scars on her body its fine after even they report it. You can still hold on to maids passport no serious crime and let the maid come back to you and beg for it.

Hammidtx, ARE YOU CRAZY???? So he obsconded with 5,0000.dhs??? NO!! He simply attempted to return the car! THe car agency attempted to EXTORT more money from him!! This is not a fricken crime!! I dealt with "REAL CRIMINALS" for years, and trust me, there are a tone on them here in Dubai!!! But they are getting away with EVERYTHING!! Including EXTORTING money from all of us, in one way or another. He attempted to pay his bill, he attempted to remedy the problem. But as USUAL NO ONE CARES!! So he felt that he had NO CHOICE!! I can see how he felt. I am not saying his behavior is right, but it's also NOT WRONG!! What's WRONG in the mentality of people like you, who are so simple minded, and defend the behavior of mafia types who extort money from hard working people! Did he steal the car?? NO!! He simply left it and made a very wise choice to leave this fricken country!!

Jamay.,, what do you mean with "REAL CRIME"? stealing $5000 is not a real crime? If you got pick pocketed $100, should we call it "borrowed money" instead of crime since the amount is $100? Interpol is just a cooperation of police departments in different countries. If the police resources are so limited that they can only catch thief or murderer and let one go free, then yes they should let the thief go, since they have bigger fish to fry and not enough resources to do both. But, if they can catch both, then why not catching both? Is there any other alternative than Interpol in catching financial criminals, who flee the country? If not, then should we let all financial criminals to getaway, so we may not disturb the Interpol? If yes, then could you make it clear what other crimes are not "REAL CRIME" and we should let them getaway, because, those types of criminals are really anxious to know!

Did Mr Bassett steal the car? No. Did he make any money? No. Was he foolish to leave the car & not return it? Yes. Is that reason enough to report him to Interpol? No. There are much bigger fish to fry & many are in Dubai.

Hamidtx - there are all kinds of thieves in this world - those protected by laws and those who arent like Mr. Bassett. At least people like Mr.Bassett are small time but the bigger sharks get away daily with all sorts.

I seriously can't believe Interpol entertain things like this though, surely they must have another division that deals with these matters, it's hardly top priority on a world scale, is it. I guess he's fortunate in being spared arrest at an airport, I'd imagine Interpol did inform his family as they realise it's hardly a massive crime worthy of the time of an organisation such as theirs and hoped he'd report to a station

Do you know that in Dubai, if you sign a COMPANY check as an authorized signatory, then you leave the company and the check bounces AFTER you leave, you can go to jail, and will be held PERSONALLY responsible for the amount? It happened to me with a company I was working for, and the office rent check bounced a few months after I quit.

AncientX...your WRONG!! I worked with INTERPOL "back in the days" and they have higher standards than to just blanket put a monetary amount "milo"dhs!! Give the agency more credit would you?? There sole purpose is to assist countries in tracking down REAL CRIMINALS...

Posted by: jamay [15.Dec.09 10 : 01 PM]

Aussiemaus...you apparently DIDN"T READ the story in it's entirety! He wanted to return the vehicle, (probably because Dubai is such an unstable place to live and work) but they would PENALIZE (of course....what's NEW?) him for returning it early. Basically they want their money!!! And they will ROB YOU(extort you) for it! You are damned if you DO and damned if you DON"T!!!

Always Annoyed......did you even bother to read tonyb1's commentary??? People are resorting to obsconding and "theft" because they are left with NO CHOICE! It's not like they can call and NEGOTIATE a payment plan. This is why I have NO credit cards, and I pay CASH for everything. I hate this country  for the way they do business.

Mr. Basset is a good looking thief, plain and simple. For those who sympathize with him, next time a crook rips you off don't run to police crying for help. Just like the case, where an unscrupulous broker rented units in Discovery Garden, which he didn't own, and an out of the country. Would it be better if the police, like in many western countries, would say, "well this is a civil matter and here is the telephone number for legal aid, and good luck in courts or collecting your money" I would never sympathize with a crook or thief.

A. A. Ali - I would imagine authorities here had no other alternative

Posted by: Always Annoyed [15.Dec.09 4 : 06 PM]

AlwaysAnnoyed -agree with you on that but I think it should be between local authorities here and local authorities of absconding persons country. They can put it on net and local TV BUT Interpol - are they debt collectors now for paltry sums.

Posted by: A. A. Ali [15.Dec.09 3 : 10 PM]

Any way he did a runner! he was broke its his fault which means he cannot come here again! Interpol are not going to waste time pursuing him in the UK - THEY CANT!

FA 1984 You say most rental cars here are from Europe - UTTER RUBBISH! - They operate under name much as a dealer franchise however they are controlled and owned HERE!!! EDUCATE YOURSELF BEFORE YOU TALK CRAP¬! Hertz is US! Alamo is US - !

Posted by: MonkeyAllen [15.Dec.09 2 : 33 PM]

This is one end of the scale - I have over AED1,000,000 dirhams outstanding from a German Prince who was living on The Palm Jumeirah, renting one of my company's villas and disappeared leaving cheques which have bounced, but I cannot get anyone to help recover the money...I think I will be on the phone to Interpole shortly myself!

Posted by: jacqueline [15.Dec.09 2 : 05 PM]

Always Annoyed: well said..Back in the days Interpole only moved on sums of AED milo and not less..

I think he deserves that since he left the car and ran away without paying. and im sure if it was his car and someone stole it he would do the same just to get his money or car back. everyone who said its a joke, yes its a joke thats loads of expats  who take loans and never pay back. So they all deserve the worst punishment for such a theft. Dont forget that most of the rentals companies in the UAE are foreign companies from Europe and not Dubai based.

A. A. Ali..LOL...

Posted by: Ancient x [15.Dec.09 1 : 45 PM]

Alwaysannoyed is right, why on earth people want something they cannot afford sooo much that they will steal and defraud other people? I cringed at his 'sorry for oneself do I look guilty' pic on the cover, as he only has himself to blame. Why couldn't he have taken a taxi instead?

Posted by: Aussiemaus [15.Dec.09 12 : 26 PM]

Stupid of him to have left the country without paying the due amount/cancellation fees nevertheless is the Interpol serious for hunting down culprits with minor offences!?! There is far more offenders than this poor cheap person. What is the difference between a terrorist a drug lord or a paltry thief? They are all the same in the eyes of the law.

I think Roddy deserves the international humiliation he has got. I hate theft and I believe that the likes of Roddy make out lives (living in UAE) more difficult by running away and not paying their debt. Whether it was via Interpol or any other way, I am all for returning someone's money back. I know I would expect that from my home country if an expat tries to take advantage of it. At the end of the day, there are thousands of Roddies in the UAE and it is about time they got caught.

This story sounds like an homage to all those fun filled comedies in the 80s and 90s.

Posted by: Noble_Samurai [15.Dec.09 8 : 33 AM]

Is this a joke or stupidity at its worse. I blame interpol for allowing itself to be used for petty things which will devalue its credibility for handling serious crimes. But on the flipside it is good they listed such notices cause none of us know what local authorities in third world countries do behind our backs. But honestly - for less than Dhs 5,000 - you are now as lethal as Osama - ha ha ha. I blame X for this - he and his bollywood joke - see now we are getting real bollywood movie crimes.

Posted by: A. A. Ali [15.Dec.09 8 : 13 AM]

Its ironic , isnt it? Owe 5000 dhs on a rental car: end up on Interpol Owe 100 times that amount to British construction firms: blame the firms for being greedy and not recognizing that there is a crisis

What is it about the UAE and bad debts? I know that we can go on about it until we are blue in the face and still never understand the way that they do business I had some debts that I was trying to sort out with the bank, I was in contact with them on a regular basis and told them that I was not running away, but they just do not listen. Has anyone heard of a bank not giving statements? Because I was told that their policy is that they dont give them out freely. (BY A BANK MANAGER). Anyway after trying to sort this out I needed to leave Dubai for a short while, I emailed the bank and called them a few times and all was fine, I left and still kept in contact with them telling them that I would sort things out as soon as they gave me a statement, When I returned to Dubai I was arrested at the airport. I spent two nights and three long days in that place. No venterlation, everyone smoking and 170 prisoners and probably about 80 beds, no one is interseted in you until you have paid in full,. Only then will you be released. The problem is that when they have you locked up, the bank charges that are added are increased tenfold. So going back to the begining, why bother getting in touch with the bank in the first place?? Dont waste your time and enrgy because they are just not interested.

WHAT A JOKE!!! Are you for real??? The Interpol is to be used for REAL CRIMINALS!! Gosh Dubai, what a joke! Perhaps you could use your resources to crack down on REAL CRIMINALS, train the police to FIGHT REAL CRIME. Or here's a thought, use the police to fine crazy drivers...they are a more real threat to life and society!! GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! LOL
