Eight-million-year-old crocs

The eight-million-year-old skulls of two crocodiles have been unearthed by archaeologists in Abu Dhabi.

The fossils were discovered during a dig at Al Gharbia in the Western Region and belonged to two adult animals who inhabited a river area during the Miocene era.

Archaeologists and anthro-pologists from the University of Yale in America, the University of Poitiers in France and the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage have been working together on excavations in the area since December.

The findings are the only examples of their kind in the region.

Experts say that between six and eight million years ago, a great river flowed through the desert area resulting in lush vegetation similar to East Africa.

Abu Dhabi’s government has vowed to protect the area.
