Irish link to Hamas murder

The hit squad responsible for the murder of Hamas’ military leader in Dubai were Irish passport holders, it has been claimed.

Irish newspaper The Herald said yesterday that Dubai Police confirmed four of Mahmoud Al Mabhouh’s assassins were travelling with Irish paperwork.

A spokesman for the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs said: “We are aware of the media reports and we are in contact with authorities locally to try and determine the truth of the reports.”

It is also believed one of the killers was a woman and that the gang fled the UAE together and headed to Europe.

The details of Al Mabhouh’s final hours remain a mystery but police said publicly this weekend that they would seek to arrest the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu if evidence was uncovered linking Mossad secret service to the killing.

Hamas has blamed Israel for the death of its military commander but Israel has declined to comment.

Officials in Dubai say they suspect a foreign “criminal gang” of killing Mabhouh in his Al Bustan Rotana hotel room on January 20, and are looking into the possible involvement of Israel’s spy agency.

Pathologists were said to have determined the cause of death as asphyxiation, probably with a pillow found near the body and stained with blood. A room cleaner found his body the next day.
