Request to hand over Thaksin

Thai authorities have made an official request to the UAE for the return of exiled former leader Thaksin Shinawtra, according to a Thai newspaper.

The Bangkok Post said yesterday that Thailand’s foreign minister Kasit Piromya has made the plea to UAE ambassador Mohammed Ali Ahmed Omran Al Shamri.

Thaksin, who stands accused of major corruption in Thailand, fled to Dubai last year.

The paper said Piromya’s secretary, Chavanont Intarakomalsut, says the Thai government wants the UAE authorities to agree an extradition treaty and send Thaksin home where a lengthy jail term awaits him after he was convicted in absentia.

Last month, Thai courts also ruled to strip the billionaire of more than 50 per cent of his assets - about $1.4billion.

The report claims the UAE ambassador agreed to pass on the message to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Thai government says it has not set a deadline for the extradition of the former Prime Minister, who was ousted in a coup in 2006.

Noone at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ was available to comment on the newspaper report yesterday.
