Bargain hunters snap up contraband

Dubai Customs made more than dhs7 million in the first half of 2010 through the sale of seized items.

The operations manager at Cargo Village customs centre, Younis Ibrahim, said that if uncleared items are not claimed within three months, they are auctioned off.

Jebel Ali Customs Centre raised more than dhs4 million through the sale of items such as tyres, bicycles, foodstuffs, toys and furniture.

Dubai Cargo Village raised nearly dhs3 million from items in cargo and lost luggage, including mobile phones, clothes, camera and carpets. And the Dry Port brought in dhs100,000 through the sale of furniture, cleaning machines and copper poles.

The money covers the costs of seizing and processing the items, with the balance going to the treasury.
