Merchant cleared of bribery

A businessman has been cleared of bribery charges.

The man, a 38-year-old Indian merchant, had been accused of offering a bribe of dhs68,000 to an inspector from the Economic Development Department.

Dubai Court of First Instance had been told that he offered the bribe after the inspector found counterfeit products at his shop worth dhs80,000, including watches, bags and sunglasses.

However, the defendant was found not guilty by the court on Thursday.

Dubai Public Prosecution is expected to appeal against the verdict.
